Agent Skills, the SKILL.md standard, moves to the Linux Foundation
Anthropic hands governance of Agent Skills to the new Agentic AI Foundation, with engineers from Google, OpenAI and others now maintaining the format behind 1 million published skills.
Anthropic has donated the Agent Skills standard, the SKILL.md format it published in December 2025, to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a body under the Linux Foundation that Anthropic co-founded with Block and OpenAI. The donation hands over the Agent Skills name, logo, GitHub organisation and the agentskills.io domain.
More than 70 platforms have adopted the format since launch, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, with over 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installs. Maintenance now sits with engineers from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI acting as individuals rather than company representatives, led by David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as lead maintainers.
Why it matters: if you have written SKILL.md files for Claude, Codex or Copilot, the format’s future no longer rests on one vendor’s roadmap. A neutral foundation with competing companies as co-maintainers is the difference between a standard and a product feature that can be deprecated on a whim.
