ChatGPT's Chrome extension can now take over your open tabs

A Work mode lets ChatGPT send messages, fill forms, download files and group tabs across your browser, not just read them. It replaces the computer-use reach OpenAI lost when it shut down Atlas.

OpenAI has split its ChatGPT Chrome extension into two modes. Chat can look across your open tabs and gather information. Work goes further: it can control tabs through Computer Use to send messages, fill out forms, download files, or group tabs for you.

The extension is listed in the Chrome Web Store at 7 million users and the update works with all ChatGPT plans, with support extending to other Chromium browsers including Edge, Brave and Opera. It is OpenAI’s second attempt at putting an agent inside your everyday browsing after it shut down the standalone Atlas browser.

Why it matters: this puts an agent capable of actually acting on pages, not just reading them, into a browser extension already running for millions of people. If you build anything with forms, checkout flows or bot-detection, assume genuine users may now be arriving with ChatGPT driving the tab rather than a human. Rate limiting and automation defences built around “real browser, so probably a person” need rethinking.

The caveat: reporting on this comes from OpenAI’s own social posts rather than a dedicated blog entry, so some rollout details, such as exact availability by plan tier and region, aren’t fully documented yet.
