Claude can now edit Google Docs, Sheets and Slides directly
A new sidebar add-on lets Claude read and edit the file you already have open, on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with edits held for approval by default.
Anthropic launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta on 6 October, adding a sidebar that puts Claude inside an open Google Doc, Sheet or Slides file instead of a separate chat tab. One install from the Google Workspace Marketplace covers all three apps.
In Docs it rewrites, restructures and reformats text in place; in Sheets it writes and debugs formulas, builds pivot tables and sensitivity analyses, and can pull a range into Python for cleanup; in Slides it drafts new slides and standardises titles using the deck’s existing layouts. The sidebar defaults to “ask before edits”, holding changes for approval before they land. Inserting web images, adding links or removing access always need a separate confirmation, labelled “security review”, regardless of mode. It’s available to individuals through the Marketplace, or an admin can install it across the whole organisation at once.
Why it matters: this runs the opposite way to Claude’s existing Drive, Gmail and Calendar connectors, which pull your files into a chat window. Here Claude works inside the file you already have open, which is a smaller ask for anyone who loses their flow switching to a separate tab.
The caveat: it’s beta and limited to paid plans — Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise — so free-tier users don’t get it.
