Claude Sonnet 4 reaches end of life on Amazon Bedrock today

Requests to anthropic.claude-sonnet-4-20250514-v1:0 start failing on Bedrock from 14 October, and migration to a newer Claude model is not automatic.

Claude Sonnet 4 hits its end-of-life date on Amazon Bedrock today, 14 October. AWS’s model lifecycle page lists the model ID anthropic.claude-sonnet-4-20250514-v1:0 as EOL across all the regions it was offered in, including us-east-1, eu-west-1 and ap-northeast-1. Per AWS’s own lifecycle policy, once a model passes EOL it becomes unavailable “in all AWS Regions and requests made to this version will fail”, and migration to a replacement does not happen automatically.

The model had been in Bedrock’s Legacy state since 14 April, with a public extended access period (higher pricing, set by Anthropic) starting 14 July. That’s a six-month runway from Legacy to EOL, which AWS guarantees as a minimum for any model it retires.

Why it matters: if you’ve got anthropic.claude-sonnet-4-20250514-v1:0 hardcoded anywhere, in a Bedrock agent, a Converse API call, a Lambda, that call starts failing from today. AWS’s own docs are explicit that you need to update your application code before EOL, not after. Anthropic’s own API retired the same model back on 15 June, pointing everyone to claude-sonnet-5-5, so if you’re calling Claude direct rather than through Bedrock, this specific deadline doesn’t touch you, it already passed.

The caveat: AWS says the model is removed “on, or soon after” the EOL date, so a handful of stray requests might still succeed for a short window. That’s not worth planning around.
