GitHub Actions retires the macOS 14 runner image today
The macos-14, macos-14-large and macos-14-xlarge labels go away on 2 November, after a month of scheduled brownouts warning anyone still pinned to them.
GitHub retires the macOS 14 runner image in Actions today, 2 November. The macos-14, macos-14-large and macos-14-xlarge labels stop being available, a month after GitHub announced the change on 1 October.
GitHub didn’t let the deadline arrive quietly. Eight scheduled brownout windows ran through October, each one making jobs on macOS 14 “temporarily fail” to flag workflows that still needed updating, and GitHub warned it might also cut macOS 14 capacity in the lead-up, lengthening queue times. Anyone pinned to the old label should move to macos-latest (currently macos-26), macos-15, or their xlarge equivalents.
runs-on: macos-15 # macos-14 is retired as of 2 November
Why it matters: if a workflow hardcodes macos-14 and nobody caught the brownout failures, CI breaks today with no code change on your side. It’s worth grepping workflow files for the label now rather than waiting for a failed run to surface it.
