GitHub Copilot adds GPT-6.1 Terra as a selectable model
OpenAI's mid-tier model lands in the Copilot picker a day after its own launch, pitched for everyday agentic coding and terminal work at a lower cost than GPT-6.1 Sol.
GitHub made GPT-6.1 Terra generally available in Copilot on 26 October, one day after OpenAI released the model itself. It is selectable from the model picker in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, Eclipse, Copilot CLI, the cloud agent, the Copilot app, github.com and GitHub Mobile, across Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise tiers.
GitHub pitches it for everyday agentic coding and terminal work at a lower cost than GPT-6.1 Sol, and says it outperformed the previous model on terminal and C# tasks in testing. It’s billed under provider list pricing with usage-based billing, with rollout gradual, so it may take a moment to show up in your picker. Business and Enterprise admins control access through the model policy in Copilot settings.
Why it matters: this is the same model OpenAI shipped yesterday at half of GPT-5.6 Terra’s price, now reachable from inside the editor most Copilot users already have open. If your agentic or terminal workloads are currently defaulting to Sol, it’s worth a direct comparison now that the cheaper option sits one click away.
The caveat: “billed at provider list pricing” means checking the per-token rate before switching heavy usage over, since it won’t necessarily match what you pay for GitHub’s own model tiers.
