GitHub ships a REST API for Copilot model policies

New GET and PATCH endpoints manage which AI models Copilot allows at the enterprise, team, app and organisation level, reaching general availability on 19 October.

GitHub shipped a REST API for Copilot model policies on 19 October, letting administrators read and update which AI models Copilot is allowed to use without clicking through the dashboard each time. The API reached general availability at four levels: enterprise, enterprise teams, enterprise apps and organisation, each with its own /copilot/model-policies endpoint supporting GET and PATCH.

Enterprise policies can delegate control downward in one of two governance modes: organisation mode hands model decisions to individual orgs, enterprise teams mode hands them to specific teams and apps instead.

GET /orgs/{org}/copilot/model-policies
PATCH /orgs/{org}/copilot/model-policies

Why it matters: GitHub has been retiring and swapping Copilot models every few weeks this autumn, and each swap needs someone to enable the replacement in Copilot’s policy settings before it actually works. An API means that step can be scripted alongside the rest of an org’s infrastructure-as-code, instead of repeated by hand through a web UI every time a model changes.

The caveat: this only manages which models are allowed, not which one a given workflow actually calls, so hardcoded model names in Actions or extensions still need updating separately when GitHub retires one.
