Google sets a 23 October shutdown for its first Deep Research model

The deep-research-pro-preview-12-2025 agent in the Gemini API stops working on 23 October 2026, with Google pointing developers to a newer preview instead.

Google’s Gemini API changelog recorded on 8 October that deep-research-pro-preview-12-2025, the first version of its managed Deep Research agent, is being retired. The model, released on 11 December 2025, stops working on 23 October 2026.

Google’s deprecations page points anyone still calling it to deep-research-preview-04-2026, or the deep-research-max-preview-04-2026 variant for longer, more thorough runs. Both shipped on 21 April 2026 and currently carry no shutdown date of their own.

Why it matters: Deep Research agents run multi-step, multi-tool jobs that are costly to rebuild against a different model, so this isn’t a drop-in swap you can leave until the week it breaks. Anyone with deep-research-pro-preview-12-2025 hardcoded into a pipeline has around two weeks from today to repoint it and retest.

The caveat: the deprecations page lists only the date, not the failure mode, so it’s unclear whether calls to the old model ID will error cleanly or just stop responding after 23 October.
