Google's new work agent can also route jobs to Claude
Gemini agent, unveiled at Gemini at Work 2026, picks whichever model suits a task, including Anthropic's models, not just Google's own.
Google Cloud announced Gemini agent on 8 October at its Gemini at Work event: a single agent meant to answer questions, handle knowledge work, create images and media, and write and run code from one prompt box. The detail worth noting is what runs underneath it: Google says it routes each job to whichever model fits best, picking across its own Gemini family and Anthropic’s Claude models today, with other private and open models planned later.
It works inside Workspace apps such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Calendar, and is also reachable through Microsoft 365 and Slack, connecting out to systems like Salesforce, ServiceNow, Jira and MCP servers. Versions for financial services and legal are in preview now; government, healthcare and retail are coming later.
Why it matters: a foundation model vendor building a product that calls a rival’s models when they fit better is a sign multi-model routing is turning into a standard product feature rather than something you bolt on yourself with an AI gateway.
The caveat: this is preview access for two industries, with no pricing and no general release date yet.
