Google locks free Gemini users to Flash-Lite starting today
Free Gemini app users lose Flash and Pro access from 9 October. Paid tiers are reshuffled too, with AI Pro gaining the Deep Think mode.
Google is changing which Gemini models each tier of the Gemini app can use, starting with free accounts today, 9 October. Free users without any AI subscription lose on-demand access to Flash and Pro and are restricted to Flash-Lite only.
The reshuffle runs through the paid tiers too. AI Plus, at $4.99 a month, keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro; Google says Plus subscribers will get an email telling them when the change lands on their account. AI Pro, at $19.99 a month, keeps all three models and gains a new Deep Think option for more thorough, slower answers. AI Ultra keeps everything, including Deep Think. The app is also adding “low,” “medium” and “high” effort levels per model, trading more of your usage limit for more thorough responses. The change applies only to personal accounts on the web and mobile apps, not Workspace or enterprise accounts, and doesn’t touch the Gemini API.
Why it matters: if you or your team have been using the free Gemini app for quick prototyping with Flash or Pro, that stops today — Flash-Lite is a noticeably weaker model for anything beyond simple queries. Anyone relying on free-tier Gemini for real work now needs at least the $4.99 Plus tier for Flash, or $19.99 Pro for Pro and Deep Think.
The caveat: this is scoped to the consumer Gemini app, not the API billed by usage, so anything built against the Gemini API is unaffected.
