GPT-6.1 Terra matches GPT-6 Astra at a tenth the price
OpenAI's new mid-tier model costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output, half of GPT-5.6 Terra, with a 1.05 million token context window.
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October, a mid-tier model aimed at visual reasoning, computer use and everyday writing rather than deep coding or research. It’s live now for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in Work and Codex, and through the API as gpt-6.1-terra.
Pricing is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output, half of what GPT-5.6 Terra charged, with cached input at $0.05 per million. The context window runs to 1.05 million tokens, with a 128,000 token output limit. OpenAI says the model finishes tasks more than three times faster on average than GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, and matches Astra’s output at roughly a tenth of the price per token.
Why it matters: computer-use tasks like reading a screen, filling in a form or triaging a queue used to mean paying for a flagship-tier model to get usable accuracy. A mid-tier model that matches that output at a tenth of the cost changes which tasks are worth automating, and is worth a benchmark run against whatever you are routing those jobs to now.
