OpenAI buys Pierre, the git startup already inside Codex

Pierre's open source Trees and Diffs libraries already handle file browsing and code review in Codex. OpenAI is now acquiring the whole company, including its Code Storage service.

OpenAI announced on 4 November that it is acquiring Pierre Computer Company, a small developer-tools maker whose open source libraries, Trees and Diffs, already run inside Codex for file navigation and reviewing code changes. Pierre also built Highlights, a syntax highlighter, and Code Storage, a hosted service for storing code and tracking its history with Git.

OpenAI framed the deal as adapting git workflows built for people to how teams now work with coding agents, not as a simple acqui-hire. Pierre’s open source projects stay open source, and OpenAI says it will keep contributing to them. Existing Code Storage customers can keep using the service after the deal closes while its features move into Codex, though no integration timeline or price was disclosed. The announcement lands two days after OpenAI’s own post on Pando, the custom Git backend it built internally once Codex-driven commits outran its previous setup.

Why it matters: if you use Codex, expect the file browsing and diff review you already see there to deepen, and expect code history and storage to become something Codex offers directly rather than something you bolt on. It’s also another sign that git tooling built for agent-scale commit volume, not just human ones, is becoming its own product category.

The caveat: OpenAI hasn’t said when Code Storage’s standalone service might wind down, or what happens to customers who aren’t on Codex.
