OpenAI will merge ChatGPT and Codex usage limits in December
Plus, Pro and Business plans will draw chat and coding-agent sessions from one shared token pool, OpenAI says, as it folds Codex into the main ChatGPT experience.
From December, ChatGPT and Codex stop having separate usage allowances. OpenAI’s help centre, updated on 31 October, says Plus, Pro and Business plans will draw both from a single shared pool, as it brings the agentic capabilities of ChatGPT Work into the main ChatGPT app.
Usage is measured in tokens, and how many you burn depends on the model and the complexity of the task. Instant chat is carved out and will not touch the pool. You’ll see combined remaining usage and reset times under Settings > Usage, and if you hit the limit you can wait for it to reset, upgrade your plan, or buy credits.
Why it matters: if you lean on Codex for coding sessions and also chat heavily in ChatGPT day to day, both now compete for the same budget from December. A long agent run could leave you short on chat headroom, or the other way round, so it’s worth watching your current usage split before the cutover.
The caveat: OpenAI hasn’t published per-plan allowance amounts or an exact December date, so there’s no way yet to size the new pool against what you get today.
