OpenAI retires GPT-5.5 from ChatGPT and Codex today

GPT-5.5 stops being available in ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex from 14 October, across every plan. The OpenAI API is unaffected.

GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex today, 14 October, across every plan: consumer, Business, Enterprise and Edu. OpenAI flagged the change a month ago, on 14 September, in its own changelog, and is explicit that it only touches the ChatGPT and Codex products, not calls made directly to gpt-5.5 through the OpenAI API.

Anyone with gpt-5.5 pinned as a workspace default, a saved model setting, a custom agent, a scheduled task or a script needs to pick a replacement before today’s cutoff. OpenAI points teams to its Codex models documentation for migration guidance, and to a separate workspace model availability page for Enterprise admins preparing the change across a workspace.

Why it matters: if GPT-5.5 is wired into a Codex workflow, a CI step, a custom GPT or an enterprise workspace default anywhere on your team, today is the day to check it rather than finding out when the job stops behaving as expected. If you only ever call the model through the raw API, this retirement does not apply to you.
