OpenAI sets a January 2027 shutdown date for five GPT-4 models

Five GPT-4o and GPT-4.1 model IDs stop working in the API on 14 January 2027, with gpt-6-luna named as the replacement.

OpenAI’s API deprecations page now lists five GPT-4 series models for removal on 14 January 2027: gpt-4o-2024-08-06, gpt-4o-2024-11-20, gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18, gpt-4.1-2025-04-14 and gpt-4.1-mini-2025-04-14. The page states that developers using these models were notified of the deprecation today, 14 October, giving exactly three months’ notice.

Fine-tuned models built on top of any of these five follow the same shutdown date as their base model. OpenAI names gpt-6-luna as the recommended replacement across the board.

gpt-4o-2024-08-06       -> gpt-6-luna
gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18  -> gpt-6-luna

Why it matters: gpt-4o and gpt-4o-mini are still some of the most commonly hardcoded model strings out there, in scripts, SDKs and config files that haven’t been touched since 2024. If you’ve got either pinned anywhere, including inside a fine-tuned model, this is the deadline to put in your calendar and the point to start testing gpt-6-luna as a drop-in replacement rather than waiting until January.
