Ona Cloud shuts down today, OpenAI points users to Codex Cloud
The cloud coding platform formerly known as Gitpod winds down on 31 October 2026. Environments do not transfer automatically, and October payments are refunded.
Ona is winding down Ona Cloud today, 31 October 2026. Ona, the company formerly known as Gitpod, joined OpenAI in August to work on background agents and Codex, and it now points Ona Cloud users to Codex Cloud as the replacement.
Migration is manual: existing cloud environments do not carry over. Ona tells users to commit any outstanding changes to their repositories and back up files externally before the deadline, then sign in to Codex Cloud with a ChatGPT account, connect their repos and rebuild environments from scratch. New signups to Ona Cloud closed before today. Ona says it will refund October payments and any unused purchased credits, including automatic top-ups, for anyone still subscribed at shutdown.
Why it matters: if you or your team ran development environments on Ona Cloud, formerly Gitpod, anything not committed or backed up by today is gone, and you are starting the Codex Cloud setup from zero rather than importing a config. It is also a concrete sign of how OpenAI is folding its August acquisition into Codex rather than running it as a separate product.
The caveat: Ona’s self-hosted and on-prem offerings are a separate product from Ona Cloud and are not mentioned as affected by this shutdown.
