OpenAI caps how many paid ChatGPT accounts share a device or card

New card and device limits block extra paid ChatGPT subscriptions once too many share the same payment card or machine. Codex CLI users who juggled accounts are among the first to notice.

OpenAI has started limiting how many paid ChatGPT accounts can share one device or one payment card. A new OpenAI help article describes two checks: at checkout, “Too many subscriptions associated with this card or device. We can’t complete this purchase,” and at sign-in, “Device limit reached.”

The caps apply to ChatGPT Go, Plus, and Pro 100, 200 and 500. Free, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are exempt. OpenAI frames it as a privacy and security measure, not a usage limit, and logging out of a blocked account does not free up a slot on that device.

Why it matters: Codex CLI users have reported hitting this first, since running separate Plus or Pro accounts on the same machine was a common way to stretch Codex’s usage caps. That workaround is going away, and OpenAI has not said how many accounts or subscriptions it actually allows per card or device.

The caveat: OpenAI hasn’t published the exact threshold, so there’s no number to plan around, just the fact that stacking accounts on one device or card will eventually get blocked.
